Dear  [Representative/Senator],

My name is [Your Name], and I am your constituent, living in [Your City and State]. I am a [member of the disability community/ally of the disability community].

I am writing to urge you to issue a public statement supporting federal workers with disabilities and to vote “NO” on any potential legislation that could jeopardize the continued employment of individuals with disabilities in the federal workforce.

Since President Trump attempted to scapegoat disabled federal employees and other diversity initiatives after the tragic plane crash in Washington, D.C., disabled federal employees have been filled with anger, frustration, and fear. His mockery of programs designed to encourage the recruitment of qualified individuals with disabilities into federal employment was unacceptable and demonstrated his profound misunderstanding of the employment initiatives.

I am particularly concerned that individuals with disabilities may be unfairly impacted by current efforts to reduce the federal workforce. Recently, each federal agency was asked to compile a list of all employees on probationary status. Many employees with disabilities are hired through the Schedule A hiring process which has a mandatory 2-year probationary period, which is often double the length of their non-disabled colleagues. Even after completing this period, their status is often not updated, leaving a disproportionate number of employees with disabilities at risk of termination. Many federal employees with disabilities have already been let go. I hope that you will put pressure on the Executive Branch to help them get reinstated and protect their jobs moving forward. Additionally, since President Trump took office, many employees have had their accommodations illegally reduced or removed, which jeopardizes their ability to perform their jobs satisfactorily and further increases the risk of termination.

The disability community needs more allies in Congress. I hope you will join me in speaking out for our community.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
